The Wonders of the Holy Name

I picked up this little booklet The Wonders of the Holy Name, by Fr. Paul O'Sullivan (from TAN publishing), in the vestibule after Mass yesterday.  It is basically just about the power of reverently saying the name of Jesus throughout the day.  Interesting that this is an area where I'd say protestants are generally way ahead of Catholics on the basis of the average person ... but the devout Catholic examples probably take it to a level that the average protestant would consider to be superstitious use of the name of Jesus.

Anyhow, an easy read.  Am going to give it a try, I think it can only help.  There was also a green scapular included, which is a Marian devotion item.  One of those Catholic things I haven't really gotten into, but since it was free, why not? :-)

Slow and not too steady

I'd like to say I'm making great progress on my reading list, but that wouldn't be an accurate statement.  Though I do read almost constantly, but online articles and bulletin boards and have ignored the books.   I have finished another chapter in A Catholic Guide to the Bible.  In a couple of chapters of Dynamic Catholicism.  That is an interesting read, has gone thru what various psychologists feel about God, some dismiss God some find the inherent belief across cultures and time as a proof of God's existence.  Looks like about the first five chapters are a sort of prequel before really discussing the faith itself.  I suppose if I finish both of those I will have to declare that a success.

New Catholic Site

Carson Weber who I first "met" on a protestant ran board, the debates on Catholicism a big factor in my conversion, has started his own website and forum:

http://www.catholicboard.com/

There are some original articles by Carson, who recently graduated with a Master's from Franciscan University.  Things are just getting started there, so drop by and have a look.

I was blessed to briefly meet Carson when he participated in a pro-life walk across America.  A wonderful young gentleman on fire for our Lord and his Church.

Trinity Sunday

Today was the celebration of the Most Holy Trinity.  Even though our priest mentioned specifically that we will never be able to totally understand this revelation from our limited perspective, would like to share the Athansian Creed.

Athansian Creed

1. Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic faith;
2. Which faith except every one do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly.
3. And the catholic faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity;
4. Neither confounding the persons nor dividing the substance.
5. For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Spirit.
6. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit is all one, the glory equal, the majesty coeternal.
7. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit.
8. The Father uncreate, the Son uncreate, and the Holy Spirit uncreate.
9. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Spirit incomprehensible.
10. The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Spirit eternal.
11. And yet they are not three eternals but one eternal.
12. As also there are not three untreated nor three incomprehensible, but one untreated and one incomprehensible.
13. So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy Spirit almighty.
14. And yet they are not three almighties, but one almighty.
15. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God;
16. And yet they are not three Gods, but one God.
17. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Spirit Lord;
18. And yet they are not three Lords but one Lord.
19. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity to acknowledge every Person by himself to be God and Lord;
20. So are we forbidden by the catholic religion to say; There are three Gods or three Lords.
21. The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten.
22. The Son is of the Father alone; not made nor created, but begotten.
23. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son; neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding.
24. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.
25. And in this Trinity none is afore or after another; none is greater or less than another.
26. But the whole three persons are coeternal, and coequal.
27. So that in all things, as aforesaid, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshipped. 28. He therefore that will be saved must thus think of the Trinity.
29. Furthermore it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believe rightly the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
30. For the right faith is that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and man.
31. God of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; and man of substance of His mother, born in the world.
32. Perfect God and perfect man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting.
33. Equal to the Father as touching His Godhead, and inferior to the Father as touching His manhood.
34. Who, although He is God and man, yet He is not two, but one Christ.
35. One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh, but by taking of that manhood into God.
36. One altogether, not by confusion of substance, but by unity of person.
37. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one Christ;
38. Who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead;
39. He ascended into heaven, He sits on the right hand of the Father, God, Almighty;
40. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
41. At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies;
42. and shall give account of their own works.
43. And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting and they that have done evil into everlasting fire.
44. This is the catholic faith, which except a man believe faithfully he cannot be saved.

St. Justin Martyr

Today is the feast day of St. Justin Martyr.  He was beheaded in 165 A.D. for his Christian faith.

http://www.eucharisticlife.com/ELimages/Timeline/200/Justin.html

We call this food Eucharist; and no on else is permitted to partake of it, except one who believes our teaching to be true and who has been washed in the washing which is for the remission of sins and for regeneration, and is thereby living as Christ has enjoined.  For not as common bread nor common drink do we receive these; but since Jesus Christ our Savior was made incarnate by the word of God and had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so too, as we have been taught, the food which has been made into the Eucharist by the Eucharistic prayer set down by Him, and by the change of which our blood and flesh is nourished, is both the flesh and the blood of that incarnated Jesus.                                                   (St. Justin Martyr, First Apology, 65)

The Visitation

Made it into Mass today and it is the celebration of the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth.  The gospel reading included the Magnificat (Canticle of Mary) from Luke 1: 46 - 55.  Which I think is a prayer worth posting. :)

"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever."

Kansas bishops statement on same sex unions

It isn't up at The Leaven's website, but four Kansas bishops (Archbishops James Keleher and Joseph Naumann and Bishops Ronald Gilmore and George Fitzsimons) published a statment on their disappointment that the Kansas legislature didn't vote to have the constitutional amendment issue on the ballot.

Hopefully they will have the website updated soon.

Edit: The Leaven updated and the article can be found here.

Summer breeze

Two of my boys are out of school for the summer, the third who attends a different school will finish next week.  So likely the updates here will be sporadic for a while.

Still, I am hoping to get a few things accomplished over the summer.

I have started JPII's Theology of the Body.  It is not a quick read.  So if I get half done with that I'll consider it an accomplishment.

I had started one of the correspondence courses from
www.amm.org/chss.htm which I hope to finish.  I'm doing A Catholic Guide to the Bible which is fairly elementary level but have learned a few tidbits from it so far.  As a convert thought it would be good to be sure I'm looking at Sacred Scripture from the Catholic point-of-view.

Also at the outlet store found a few books that I hope to get through as well.

  Praying with John Cardinal Newman which has meditations based on prayers and writings of Newman.

Then Sacred Passages: Bringing the Sacraments to Lifewhich explores each of the Sacraments.

Another called Dynamic Catholicism by Thomas Bokenkotter, which I can already tell has what would be considered some liberal viewpoints.  Says it was formerly titled Essential Catholicism and looks like it will be interesting.

If for some reason that isn't enough, I hope to get through the two C.S. Lewis sci fi books I haven't read yet - Perelandra and That Hideous Strength.  Read the first in the triology, Out of the Silent Planet, a couple of years ago and enjoyed that.

Doubtful I will get through all that, but the goal for now.  If you've read any of those books would love to hear your comments. :)

All Barque, No Bite

What is a barque?  Simply, a boat.  The Barque of Peter is a traditional phrase which represents the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church.  It is a great image, to think of us all on the same boat, headed to the same destination and with the same captain at the helm.

This is the first entry in our ship's log.  More to come. :)
